Taoubt (a portmanteau of Tao and doubt, pronounced like “doubt” [daʊt]) is the brain child of Gregg Stephens, a San Francisco Bay Area native and co-owner of the virtual instrument developer Soundiron. The music of Taoubt exhibits a diverse influence of styles ranging from heavy, complex progressive rock, to moody atmospheric soundscapes; from middle eastern melodies, to acoustic pop. The project emerged in the late 2010’s as a rough collection of riffs, songs and ideas that had formed over the previous two decades while in other bands. The writing process for each song has spanned years, giving them an anachronistic feel, while providing an evolutionary timeline of musical influences. With instrumental support from longtime friends Dan Genzale on drums and percussion and Clipper Ford on bass, Taoubt has created a unique sound that’s melodically and rhythmically dense, introspective, and emotional.
